Uche Fuels Dominant Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that all but guarantees them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
A further three points in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal direct entry to the knockout stages, especially following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, scoring for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were outmatched against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee injuries.
Control Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the box, but the official waved away the appeals.
The formerArsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was as good as over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to withdraw several players like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche then blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect night for the visiting side.
