Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the group was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted assault against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots managed by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the world’s largest economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
